DFC Achieves Major Milestone: Advancing Toward Full-Scope GCF Accreditation

City of Belmopan, Belize: July 2, 2025 – The Board of Directors of the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is proud to announce that the DFC has officially been accredited by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), marking a historic achievement in Belize’s journey toward climate resilience and sustainable development. The accreditation covers Basic fiduciary standards, Specialized fiduciary standards for project management, and on-lending and/or blending (for loans, equity and guarantees).

This accreditation positions the DFC as a Direct Access Entity (DAE) to the GCF, enabling it to directly mobilize and manage climate finance of up to US$50 million for low-risk, high-impact projects. This milestone is the result of a multi-year effort to align DFC’s governance, fiduciary responsibilities and environmental & social management framework with international standards, and it reflects the Corporation’s unwavering commitment to supporting Belize’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The Board extends its deepest gratitude to the Green Climate Fund Board for its confidence in the DFC’s capacity and vision. We also thank the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Belize’s National Designated Authority to the GCF, for its steadfast support and strategic guidance throughout the accreditation process. Special appreciation is due to the many individuals and institutions – both domestic and international – who contributed their expertise, time, and encouragement to this endeavour.

Above all, we commend the exceptional leadership and dedication of the DFC Team. From the integration of a robust Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) into lending operations to the development of a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) strategy, the DFC has demonstrated its readiness to lead Belize’s climate finance agenda.

With this accreditation, the DFC is now empowered to:

  • Finance transformative projects in Energy generation and access;
  • Buildings, cities, industries and appliances;
  • Livelihoods of people and communities;
  • Health, food and water security; as well as
  • Public, private and cross-cutting types of projects/programmes.

This achievement is not just a win for the DFC – it is a win for Belize. It affirms our country’s leadership in climate action and opens new pathways for inclusive, green economic growth.
