The University of Belize (UB) and the DFC signs MOU to Increase Equitable Access to Education via Access to Financing

University of Belize

On August 28, 2020, the University of Belize (UB) and the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) enabling both institutions to increase equitable access to education for Belizean students at the University of Belize through access to financing from the DFC.

The DFC will serve as the primary financier in the implementation of the DFC-UB Loan Program consistent with DFC’s priority list of training. The MOU strengthens the working partnership of the institutions, creating mechanisms for the easier exchange of information required to meet the financial needs of the University’s students, as well as to facilitate the student’s loan application with their financing needs with the DFC.

Additionally, the two institutions will collaborate to promote access to education financing to prospective and existing UB students, enabling them to undertake and complete higher education at our local University. The University of Belize will also work to identify deserving student applicants who may be eligible candidates for DFC’s 8% Special Student Loan Program. The university will also promote the use of DFC’s online Student Loan Application Portal, which allows prospective students to quickly and easily apply for education financing with the DFC.

Mrs. Natalie Ewing-Goff, General Manager of the DFC stated that “This agreement of cooperation between the University of Belize and the DFC, illustrates the unwavering commitment of our respective institutions to ensure Belizean students can access the higher education they need.”

Dr. Clement Sankat, President of the University of Belize shared, “The University of Belize has worked steadily with the DFC to promote its student loan program. There is no better time than now for UB students, many facing increased hardship as a result of this financial crisis we are in, to engage the DFC and despite the challenges, to invest in their tertiary education at UB.”
